About the pendant
A real butterfly wing encased in acrylic perspex and set in a sterling silver frame. Both sides of the wing are visible and the back is completely different to the front.
Morpho butterflies get their colour from light refraction caused by tiny scales on the surface of the wing. The iridescent blue you see, is in fact an optical illusion!
Where do the butterflies come from
The butterflies are sourced from an organisation that manages conservation programs all over the world. Agricultural development has caused the natural habitat of a lot of butterfly species to become threatened, and their populations started dwindling. Conservation programs were therefore started to enable farmers from third world countries to keep the rain forests on their land intact, while still providing a livelihood that paid better than monocultural crops. The breeding program enables thousands of butterflies to be bred sustainably. A small portion of the butterflies are caught and sold, and the money generated from the sales ensures that the tropical forests, which are vital to their survival, are preserved.
