About the Pendant
A real butterfly wing encased in glass and set in a sterling silver frame. Both sides of the wing are visible and the back is completely different to the front. The side of the frame is engraved with the year of manufacture, making it the perfect gift for a special occasion.
Commonly known as the Sunset Moth, the Urania Chrysiridia Ripheus is a day flying moth that mimics butterflies to ward of predators. The iridescent wing gets its colour from light refraction caused by light bouncing off tiny scales on the surface of the wing!
Where do the butterflies come from
The butterflies are sourced from an organisation that manages conservation programs all over the world. Agricultural development has caused the natural habitat of a lot of butterfly species to become threatened, and their populations started dwindling. Conservation programs were therefore started to enable farmers from third world countries to keep the rain forests on their land intact, while still providing a livelihood that paid better than monocultural crops. The breeding program enables thousands of butterflies to be bred sustainably. A small portion of the butterflies are caught and sold, and the money generated from the sales ensures that the tropical forests, which are vital to their survival, are preserved. The symbolism of butterflies
Overwhelmingly, cultural myth and lore honour the butterfly as a symbol of transformation because of its impressive process of metamorphosis. This truly special piece of jewellery will metamorphose into an heirloom, causing hearts to alight generation after generation.
This is a delicate piece of jewellery that will benefit from careful handling. Please follow the care instructions to maintain it’s shine and colour for years to come.
The pendant is not waterproof. Care should be taken to avoid contact with moisture, as this will damage the wing. Do not apply moisturiser and perfume close to the wing. When not worn, store in a cool dark dry place to preserve the colour for years to come. Polish with a dry silver polishing cloth. To ensure the longevity of your pendant, we highly recommend that you add one of our Sterling Silver polishing cloths to your order.
